Nik Aziz-Karpal birthday cake gesture gives new life to PR unity

Harakahdaily, 28 January 2013

Jan 27: At a time when Barisan Nasional media - most notably MCA's The Star - have been giving unusually good coverage of the criticisms by DAP chairman Karpal Singh over the hudud law plan by the state government in Kelantan led by Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the sight of the duo wishing each other well shows that attempts at pitting the veteran political leaders against each other have failed.

The PAS Murshidul Am today paid a courtesy call to the Bukit Gelugor member of parliament's residence as part of the former's visit to Penang.

Karpal, who was at home with other family members, presented a birthday cake to Nik Aziz, who recently turned 82.

According to news portal Malaysiakini, Nik Aziz spent some 20 minutes at Karpal's house in Jalan Scotland, where traffic had snarled due to Thaipusam celebrations.

The portal also quoted Karpal as recalling his friendship with Nik Aziz, which goes back to the 1970s when they were seated next to each other as MPs in the Dewan Rakyat. Nik Aziz was then the PAS MP for Pengkalan Chepa, a seat he held up to 1986.

An elated Karpal told Malaysiakini that Nik Aziz had arrived thirty minutes earlier than scheduled.

"I was still bathing but rushed down to meet him. He was fit and jovial. I am really happy to see him. His presence sends a strong message that our unity is as strong as ever, despite all that happened," he added.

The political alliance between DAP and PAS in Pakatan Rakyat has often been exploited by BN's race-based parties namely UMNO and MCA. While UMNO claims that PAS 'sold-out' its Islamic principles to DAP, MCA leaders have been trying to woo Chinese support by insisting that DAP was being used by PAS to establish an Islamic state.
