The letter, which is written at the beginning of 1588 by the queen’s Principal Secretary and stored at the Royal English Archives, wants from the British Ambassador in İstanbul, William Harborne to encourage Ottoman Empire to weaken the so called Spanish fleet “undefeated armada” by their attacks on East Mediterranean Sea.
English Ambassador William Harborne is obviously begging Sultan Murad III to get help against the Spanish armada on his letter;
“The request is sentenced for the holy Emperor. Thanks to holiness of precious Emperor. Our request to the great and wealthy, holy, the one which all the universe shelters. God bestowed upon to your slave to constitute a blessed peace between “Your Highness” and “English Queen”. Nine years ago your humble slave accepted this duty faithfully and willingly and hoped your highness would destroy our shared enemies; the pagans with your endowed power and mightiness. With God’s name, I only beg for you to show mercy to your innocent slave. If you don’t have the will to Show your mighty power to Pagan (referring to the king of Spain), please send at least 60 or 80 galleys to weaken them. Despite my lord queen is a woman and according her gender, she must not be capable to war, she is carrying out God’s will about this issue with all her power. If you leave your very loyal friend alone at this critical time, all the World will be surprised by your action. Because my lord, she put both her life and commonwealth in a great danger trusting your Word and friendship. Your highness, if you put together a fleet with my queen as soon as possible, with this you will behave in the way to protect the honour, dignity of Glorious Ottoman Lineage and existence of Ottoman Empire according to the commandment of God Almighty and order of Sharia. If you do this, proud Spanish and fake Pope and all their supporters will not only lose their hopes for victories, but also be punished for their arrogance. God only shields the ones near Him. By favour of you, God will punish and destroy pagans, the remaining ones will join the people who worship the real God like you and us. God will make us who are on the righteous way reach victory and give blessings.”
At the letter which Sultan Murad III sent to England says, “Just as how the ones who are friends with Ottoman Sultans was respected and proctected before, today British Queen will be behaved the same.”
