Rebels battle tanks in Damascus Neighbourhoods

Summary of Events

The heavy clashes between the regime forces and armed resistance groups continued in the capital as military tanks and troops of regime forces shelled and invaded the neighbourhoods of Maidan, Qadam, Maseh, Tadamon, Barzeh, Kafarsouseh and the central square of Abasyeen and the provincial towns of Thiyabiya, Daf Ashoq and Zamalka, leaving at least 10 dead and several others injured.

Following the defection of the brother-in-law of senior Syrian security officer Rustom Ghazaleh and scores of soldiers and security forces, regime forces carried out a massive military offensive against the village of Karfa in the province in Daraa, burned down several houses after looting their contents and arrested more than 10 members of Ghazaleh’s family.

Regime forces killed more than 100 people today. Fifteen died in the province of Homs as a result of the heavy shelling and raid campaigns in the towns of Rastan, Talbiseh and Bowayda Sharqiya and the surrounding villages in the province of Homs. Ten died in the province of Damascus. Eight were killed in the province of Aleppo because of clashes with the armed resistance groups in the town of Jarables. Four died in the province of Idlib because of the heavy shelling targeting the town of Salqin and the villages of Shantara and Tal Sallour. Ten people were killed by heavy gunfire and mortar shells that targeted the neighbourhoods of Bab Qably, Aleppo Road and Hamidiya in the city of Hama. Six died in the city of Deir Azzour during clashes between regime forces and armed resistance groups. Three more died in the province of Daraa because of heavy shelling targeting the town of Ataman and the neighbourhood of Central Daraa. Three defected soldiers and 27 regime soldiers from the regime army were killed during clashes that occurred throughout the country.

Regime forces continued its military offensive on civilian areas in the Aleppo suburbs of Hawta, Ezaz, Anjara, Tal Refaat, Bayanoun, Bashntara, Hajila, Jarables and Ebzemo. They also continued in the Damascus suburbs of Qatana, Moadamiya, Jasrin, Douma and Saqba and in the villages located at Akrad Mountain in the suburb of Latakia. Attacks took place in the neighbourhoods of Jouret Sheyah, Qarabis, Khaldiya, Qosur, Jobar, Baba Amr, Makramiya, and Dar Kabeera in the city of Homs and its provincial towns of Sultaniya, Qasir, Za’farana, Bowayda Sharqiya, Dabaa, Houleh, Sa’an, Aabel and Kamam. They continued in the neigbourhoods of al-Sad Road and Herak in the city of Daraa and its provincial towns of Koforshams, Othman, Ghariya Sharqiya, Yadouda, Inkhel, Mzereib, Maliha Sharqiya, Maliha Gharbiya and Nasib, in the villages of Rami, Kafarhaya, Kafayahmol and Maghara in the province of Idlib and its provincial towns of Salqin, Rakaya, Khan Sheikhoun and Ma’arrat Naman, in the neighbourhoods of Hamidiya, Jbaila, Mowathafin, Ommal, Old Airport, Sheikh Yasin, Ardy, Takaya, Madalgi Ring Road in the city of Dier Azzour and in the towns of Tayana and Quriya in the province of Deir Azzour.
