Clashes intensify in Aleppo and Damascus

Summary of Events

The heaviest clashes in more than 20 days occurred today between rebel fighters and regime forces in the northern province of Aleppo, as rebels continued their attack on Manegh military airbase. Rebels also surrounded the Aleppo Citadel, the local Aleppo TV station and Hanano military barracks, while seizing power of additional neighborhoods in the Old City. In response, the regime’s MIG fighter jets and helicopter gunships attacked the neighbourhoods of Saladin, Shaar, Sukari, al-Bab Road and the provincial towns of Azaz, Tal Refaat and Jabin. They demolished several houses and killed and wounded many civilians.

Regime forces carried out summary executions in the neighbourhoods of Tadamon and Jobar in Damascus, leaving at least 20 civilians dead. Some appeared to be handcuffed. A similar incident in the village of Zour Heissa in Hama left more than 10 civilians dead. Another 10 died as a result of the heavy shelling on the Damascus suburb of Harasta, while 10 more died after the neighbourhood of Hamidiya in the city of Deir Azzour was hit with a mortar shell.

During visit by the Syrian delegation to Moscow, Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil announced that Russia is printing new banknotes for Syria. Syrian Minister of Finance Mohammad Julelati said that he requested a Russian loan to replenish Syria’s hard currency reserves, which have been depleted by a U.S. and EU embargo on Syrian exports. He refused to announce how much he requested, but said that Moscow promised to review the request, aimed at softening the impact of the embargo imposed on Syria.

Heavy clashes intensified in Damascus, as rebel fighters attacked security checkpoints a few hundred metres away from President Bashar al-Assad’s palace in the neighbourhood of Muhajereen. Clashes also occurred in the neighbourhoods of Tadamon, Ruken Adin and Salhiya, regime forces deployed artillery to Qasioun Mountain and bombarded the neighbourhoods of Jobar and Ruken Adin, killing several people.

Regime forces continued attacks on the Damascus suburbs of Erbin, Zabadani, Hameh, Douma, Qudseya, Kafarbatna, Kanaker, Dummar and Qatana. It also continued shelling several neighbourhoods in the city of Homs and its provincial towns of Houleh, Rastan and Qasir. It also continued shelling the Deir Azzour suburb of Mayadin and the village of Husayniya, and it resumed shelling the Idlib suburbs of Ma’arrat Naman and Ma’arshamarin. It also shelled the Daraa suburbs of Dael, Sheikh Maskin and Taffa. The villages of Oweinat, Wadi Sheikhan and Ghanima in the province of Latakia were also attacked. Regime forces raided the village of Bayda in the province of Tarus as well as the neighbourhoods of Hader and Qusour in Hama city and its provincial town of Kawkab.
